Have you ever thought of winding your own electric guitar pickups? It is easy and fun if you build the machine that I have designed. Rewind classic guitar pickups or wind new ones with this winder. It is easy to build with basic materials that are readily available. No precision machining or welding is necessary. The whole machine can be built with basic tools. My plans are very easy to follow, even if you have never built anything.
My pickup and universal coil winder design is the result of years of experimentation in the hobby of pickup winding. I have built several pickup winders over the years, and the design I offer you here takes the best features and makes them available without expensive equipment. The entire winder is built from scratch from inexpensive materials. As with all my designs, the winder strikes a perfect balance between function, cost, and availability of materials. In a well designed project, more features do not translate to more money and exotic components.
My winder offers many ingenious features that are not available on commercial pickup winders of the same price range. This winder can be built for a fraction of the price of any commercial model, yet it does much more. The unique adjustable cam allows you to change the travel length of the wire feed while it is running. If scatter wound pickups are desired, the cam can be disabled and the wire guided by hand. Other features of the design include independently adjusted spindle and wire guide speeds (so you can vary the speed of the winding with relation to the wire feed), a simple yet ingenious wire tensioning system, and an inexpensive and easy to install counter.
This winder is not just designed for pickups, however. It can be used for any experimental coil you may wish to build for electronics projects, such as electromagnets, RF coils, transformers, solenoids, or any other coil you desire. The adjustable spindle to wire feed ratio allows you to vary the wire spacing and the adjustable cam allows you to vary the coild width
If you are ready to start winding pickups or coils, why not build your own winder? You will save money and the satisfaction is much greater. That fact that you are already interested in winding your own pickups or coils shows that you have a do-it-yourself attitude, so build your own winder! You won't find a commercial winder with the features of this winder even if you pay five times the cost to built it!
